SCIENCE CENTER LAUNCHES VIRTUAL SCIENCE FAIR

April 6 - May 30

Free event offers prizes and opportunities for families to work together on projects

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) When schools assign science fair projects in the fall, it often sends parents scurrying around for the right poster boards and supplies, clearing space for frenzied experiments with questionable outcomes, and constant vacation-time reminders that final projects are due after the busy holidays. Educators at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hypothesized that science nerds of all ages would unite over the idea of a springtime virtual science fair with amazing prizes, and that families and budding Einsteins would welcome the opportunity to predict, experiment, collect data and review results at a less hectic time of year.

“Our education team is always looking for ways to honor our mission to ‘open every mind to science,’” said Kate Arrizza, President and CEO for the SFSCA. “A virtual science fair seemed like the perfect way to keep creative curiosity and critical thinking going during these stay-at-home days of learning. While kids take the lead as the project team captains, families are encouraged to work together, be safe and have fun.”

Designed for students in grades K – 8, the SFSCA Virtual Science Fair will consist of two-week sessions throughout the months of April and May. Participants can choose to compete in one or all of the remaining themed weeks.

  • April 20th – May 1st = Backyard Science Lab
  • May 4th – May 15th = Slingshot Paper Airplane Launch
  • May 18th – May 29th = Rube Goldberg Machine

There will be two grade categories per series: K-5 and 6-8, with prizes ranging from award-winning robotics and engineering kits to microscopes and mini drones. A panel of SFSCA educators and leadership will be judging the projects and choosing the winners. All participants will get a digital participation certificate and be entered into a drawing for an admission pack to the Science Center.

Participation is free with donations requested. When projects are ready for submission, participants must include a short, 30-second video of their project.
