Walmart & Dicks hit with discrimination lawsuit over new gun policies

Tyler Watson,20, from Oregon filed a lawsuit Monday against Dicks Sporting Goods and Walmart after he claims both national companies refused to sell him a rifle, recently.

In the suit, Watson claims to have encountered age discrimination when he tried to purchase a .22-caliber Ruger rifle on Feb.24 in a store owned by Dick’s Sporting Good’s.

The alleged incident occurred four days before the company announced that it would not sell guns to anyone under 21 following the deaths of 17 people at the hands of 19-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Walmart made a similar nationwide announcement the same day as Dick’s.

Watson then went to an Oregon-based Walmart and again tried to purchase a gun, according to the suit.

Oregon law allows residents to buy shotguns or rifles at the age of 18.

The lawsuit says that Dicks and Walmarts policies violate Oregon statutes which protect residents against discrimination based on race, religion, sexual orientation or age.

Watson who is already a gun owner according to his attorney is asking Judges in Oregon to force Dicks and Walmart to stop unlawfully discriminating against 18,19 and 20-year-old customers in all the state’s locations.

He is also asking for a “yet-to-be-determined” amount of punitive damages and paid attorney fees.

The lawsuit is the first against the nation-wide companies since they’ve enacted their new gun policies.

Watson’s attorney believes the lawsuit could be the first of many in the United States.
