The mayor of a small town in Mexico is marrying an alligator. A festive wedding ceremony was held Thursday night in the village of San Pedro Huamelula, in the southern state of Oaxaca [[ wuh HAH kuh ]], that saw Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa marry a small alligator wearing a white wedding dress. The wedding was part of ancient tradition dating back to pre-Hispanic times in Mexico, where some indigenous cultures believe the alligator is a deity representing mother earth. Oaxaca is rich in indigenous cultures that still use their traditional languages and rituals.
